Cultural information for:

Soil media: a mix of one half garden soil and one half course builders sand (or perilite). Mulch with rotten wood or wood chips. Drainage is the most important detail for these plants. PH: around neutral, will accept a little below and a little above.

Light conditions: morning sun until 10 AM in the northern parts of the US. Shade to filtered shade in other parts of the US.

Moisture requirements: keep moist during active growth and flowering. Reduce the quantity of watering in July and August after active growth has ceased.

Fertilizing: None.

Planting: prepare a planting site 12" deep and 12" across. Set the plant accordingly with root growth. Plant the top of the bud 1 to 2 inches deep.

Hardiness: hardy in beds. Need at least 2 months of 35 degree winter temperatures. Depths depends on a reliable snow cover. If snow cover is not reliable, plant on the deeper side and mulch with 6" of material for the winter. Remove in the spring. Becareful of removing the mulch to soon, as the flower buds can be frosted off. For areas that have freeze thaw cycles in the spring, mulch heavily 12" or more after the ground has frozen or near frozen in the fall.
