Cultural Information

Cultural information for:

Soil media: two parts black (sedge) peat, one part sand, two-three parts perlite. Mulch with shredded leaves, one inch deep. In pots, coarse vermiculite may be used, and is recommended for seedlings.

Light conditions: light shade to high open shade.

Moisture requirements: keep soil damp at all times. Must be well drained.

Fertilizing: general all-purpose fertilizer at 10-25% strength recommended for pot plants. Apply every three or four weeks up to mid-July. Flush media with water before next application.

Planting: plant with growth bud just covered or partially exposed. Roots should spread out flat with the tips slightly downward.

Hardiness: very hardy, however, buds are damaged where thaw occurs in mid-winter. Mulch with heavy cover of shredded leaves to protect new buds and reduce effect of thaws where planted out-of-doors. Remove most of mulch in spring. Recommend pot culture for areas south of Missouri, with at least three months artificial cooling. Artificial cooling can be readily achieved by placing pot in plastic bag and placed in the crisper of the refrigerator for the required time.
